The Oxford Wildcat bowling team bowled the Colts of Troy on Tuesday Feb. 5.
The Girls team from Troy was struck by the flu bug and had to forfeit the match. The Boys team; however, showed up trying to prove the tie they earned earlier in the year was no fluke, but Oxford had other ideas.
The Wildcats would win game one of bakers and baker totals to jump to a 6-4 lead, which was as close as Troy would get. Oxford won eight of 10 matches and avenged the tie winning 24- 6. Oxford had Kyle Woody with a 225,Jake Delong 204,217 and Brady Wynkoop 206 and 201.
The last match of the season was Thursay night Feb. 7 against Lake Orion. The girls from Lake Orion, who only have one loss for the season, were challenged as Oxford jumped on LO winning both baker games and grabbing a 10-0 lead, but the Dragons came back strong, lead by senior Kendra Stankewicz. Kendra had a spare in frame one and then tossed 10 strikes in a row finishing with a 286 game. LO won seven of 10 matches and finished with a 17 to 13 victory.
‘Lake Orion has a veteran team and some real nice bowlers. Our girls battled but were just out matched today,? said Coach J.R. Lafnear ‘I was real impressed by our girls cheering for Kendra. They showed true sportsmanship.?
The Oxford Boys also jumped on LO in baker winning both and gaining a 10-0 lead. In head up play the Wildcats shot a season high 1116 in game 1. Leading the way was Junior Kyle Woody. He had a spare in the 1st frame and the 10 strikes in row finishing with a 289 game. He was followed by Brady Wynkoop’s 232 game and Sean McKinney’s 235.
In game two the Cats led by Shawn Donaldson and McKinney with 216 games. Oxford finished with a 25 to 5 victory.
‘I’m real excited about the way the boys are bowling right now. They are really concentrating and everyone is at the top of their games,? added Lafnear. ‘We should be in good shape at the league tournament and Regionals.?
The boys ended their OAA season with a record of 9 ? wins and 4 ? loses. The Girls finish with a record of 9 wins and 5 loses.
The Wildcats and the Dragons together said good-bye to their senior bowlers after the match. In a joint celebration the seniors and there parents were honored.
‘We spend a lot of time together in the bowling center and it seemed like the right thing to do,? Lafnear said. ‘Some of these kids have practiced and competed against each other for four years.?
