Golf outing stays true to founders

The 15th Annual Roy E. & Budd H. Lester Memorial Golf Scramble was held Aug. 4 at Oxford Hills Golf Club.
This very special event started with just one family and 20 golfers. Although it has grown over the years the mission has stayed the same; serve great food, have lots of fun, and earn a few bucks for the American Cancer Society!
The past 6 years this event has also sponsored 4 children and 2 adults, individuals who were diagnosed and battling cancer. One succumbed to this evil disease; the others are in treatment or remission we are happy to say.
This year the Lester family was honored by the American Cancer Society as the longest running and highest earning third Party Private Event in Southeast Michigan.
All of the family members pictured have helped to make this possible right here in Oxford, especially Lon (son of Budd) and Rick (son of Roy) Lester who have shared the hard work of chairing the event over the years. And we would be remiss if we did not mention Vicki (Lester) Kalohn who has been battling cancer herself for the last 2 outings but continues to fill goody bags (with help from her husband, Jim) for every golfer to enjoy.
A thank you goes out to Oxford Hills and to all those who have donated prizes or have supported manually or monetarily, including our many local businesses and golfers, year after year. And thank you to our local newspaper and TV channel, it means so much. Most of all, thank you Roy and Budd Lester, if not for the men you were to all of us this outing would not exist.
There is a Lone Ranger in everyone, we just need to find where we can do the most good, and for the Lester’s it has been this outing. Thanks again for the continued support, making a difference in the lives of others. God Bless and see you next year! – Lauri (Lester) Lowe
