Last Saturday runners wearing pink flooded the fields of Lake Orion High School.
Walking and running for the third annual A Mother’s Wish 5K and optional 10K were over 500 people, with 386 preregistered. Plus, add another 125 volunteers and spectators to total 600 to 700 people that came out to support the cause.
With a plethora of different race registration fees, a pink store inside selling merchandise, and the funds pooled from the 50-50 tickets, donations for A Mother’s Wish tallied over $20,000. The Lake Orion Schools Community Enrichment and A Mother’s Wish co-sponsored and organized the event.
‘With the schools because we have such great facilities it’s such a nice outlet that they can come here and use our awesome facilities. And the ten people on the board for A Mother’s Wish work very hard throughout the year to put this on,? Ben Gerdeman said, a board member of the foundation and the Enrichment Supervisor for Lake Orion Community Enrichment.
Before her death in 2008, Lake Orion teacher Kathy Luby initiated the idea to create a foundation that serves the needs of families struggling from the day to day impacts of breast cancer. In honor of her legacy, A Mother’s Wish was created by her close friends to support those enduring the journey and to ease the burden for local families.
‘Kathy was my high school friend, and she said so many people helped me, we have got to help other people. So, we’ve created A Mother’s Wish to help women in Oakland County pay their medical bills. We just gotta keep giving back because you never know when it will be you or one of your friends,” Carol St. Henry said, board member of A Mother’s Wish.
