Lake Orion pedestrian killed by Oxford driver

A 60-year-old Lake Orion man was killed Sunday night when he either tripped or fell onto M-24, west of the Valero Gas Station, and was struck by a car.
The man was identified as Mark L. Vance.
According to Chief Jerry Narsh, of the Lake Orion Police Department, officers received a 9-1-1 call at about 8:35 p.m. about a man walking in the roadway on M-24. The caller said the man was stepping in and out of the roadway and was in danger. Lake Orion Police arrived within two minutes of the call and found the man lying on M-24.
He was hit by a southbound vehicle and when police arrived he was being attended by an off-duty nurse who stopped to help. According to witnesses, Vance was crossing S. Broadway (M24) west from the Valero gas station. He tripped or fell into the roadway near the curb lane on the west side of the roadway’and was in nearly a prone position when he was struck by a south bound motorist driving a 2012 Chevy Malibu.
The driver of the vehicle is a 17-year-old male, resident of Oxford, with a 16-year-old female passenger, also from Oxford.
Vance was crossing the roadway in an area away from the marked crosswalk. Both vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash with regard to the victim, not the driver.
There were several witnesses at the scene and the crash remains open pending the completion of the investigation. Lake Orion police were assisted by Oxford Police Department and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department accident reconstruction unit.
