The Lake Orion ski team hosted their invitational ski meet on the best snow Coach Derek Delzer has seen all season.
Early morning temperatures of minus seven degrees provided the snowy crunch as coaches arrived to Mt. Holly to set the course.
Lake Orion hosts an invitational meet every year and invites several teams to participate.
The Dragon’s boys? team placed first in giant slalom with 30 points, and third in slalom with 42 points behind West Bloomfield (20 points) who placed first, and Holly/Oxford (36 points) who finished second.
The girls placed third in both giant slalom and slalom, behind Bloomfield who took first in both GS and slalom and Fenton/Linden who took second.
Logan Stetsko finished first for the boys team in GS and second overall, finishing’in 24.41 seconds the first run and 22.73 seconds in the second run.
Justin Pavlisak finished second for the boys in GS and third overall, with a 24.62 finish in the first GS course and 23.11 finish in the second. Justin Clause finished third in GS and fifth hoverall, with a combined score of 48.16.
Logan Stetsko was also the fastest Dragon in the two slalom courses, placing fourth overall in 29.61 seconds the first run and 26.83 seconds the second run. Justin Pavlisak took seventh overall, and was the second fastest Dragon for boys slalom, with a 30.86 second course the first run and 27.09 finish the second run. Brenden McClean was 15th’overall, and the third fastest Dragon with a combined time of 1:07:10.
‘The cool thing is on the boy side we are starting to have some boys step up that are freshman for next year,? Coach Delzer said, naming Brenden McClean, Andrew Brown and Jack Marcus.
Lady Dragons carved out a third place finish in both GS and slalom.
West Bloomfield won the GS races with 25 total points; Fenton/Linden got second with 33 points and Lake Orion took third with 44 points.
Katie Tyrrell was first for her team, and fourth overall for both GS runs at Mt. Holly, crossing the finish line with a flat 26 seconds for her first run, and a 24.10 for her second run. Alex Bergquist was second in GS for the LO girls ski team and sixth overall, with a 26.67 finish time for the first run, and a 24.38 for the second run.
Sydnee Reid finished third overall for the LO team, and 11th’overall for the invitational, finishing with a 27.17 and a 24.69 for the first and second run respectively.?
The Lake Orion girls? team also placed third in slalom, with a total of 47 points, two points off of Linden/Fenton who scored a 45. West Bloomfield took first with 19 points. Alex Bergquist had the fastest slalom time for the girls? team, with a combined total 1:07:50, 5th’overall, with Madison Reid a few seconds behind at a combined total of 1:10:18 for both slalom runs and eighth overall. Amber Methnery finished third for the LO girls team, and 15 overall, with a total time of 1:13:70.
Delzer said his up and coming girls will be critical for the team’s post season success this year, including juniors Madison Reid, Sydnee Reid, Tara Kursinksy, sophomore Makayla Krye, with high hopes for freshman Emily Hewett.
We expect to make a run for the state meet, Delzer said.
Dragons were competing in Regionals Wednesday at Pine Knob, and will race Tuesday, February 18 for SEMSL League Championships at Alpine Valley.
If the team qualifies, or individuals qualify separately, they will go to compete at either Schuss Mountain or Nub’s Nob Monday, February 24, depending on the qualifying division.
