Students aware of more than reading at Blanche Sims

Detroit Piston’s center Andre Drummond read two books to squeaming Blanche Sim’ers Monday night for National Reading Awareness Month this March.
Both Drummond and students took turns reading ‘Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses? and ‘Dragons love Tacos? at the end of their day.
Between books Drummond asked each student why reading is so important.
‘I like the Harry Potter books, I’m starting to read those again,? Drummond said. ‘Even me, I slack because I don’t really read a lot, but I’m starting to get back into it again.?
He likes to do events like these as a chance to read out-loud to the public.
‘That was one of the biggest things I was trying to teach today,? he said, ‘being able to know how to read, and being able to do it fluently.?
At the end of the assembly, Principal of Blanche Sims Jennifer Goethals read students? questions to Drummond and learned he was 6?10??, that his jersey number is 0 because he gave Chauncie Billups #1, that this is Drummond’s second year on the Pistons, and what his favorite move is in basketball.
‘Have you seen me slam dunk,? Drummond shot.
‘He asked to get some chairs so the kids could sit by him and help him read, I mean that’s so sweet,? Goethals said. ‘It was sweet for him to go and ask the kids to be part of it, because those kids will never forget that.?
