Carnival, fireworks are all part of the fun

The Oxford area’s summer festival season is set to kick off this week with the much-anticipated 6th Annual Seymour Celebration June 26-28 at Seymour Lake Township Park.
‘Every year, it’s just gotten bigger and bigger and bigger,? said Ron Davis, director of the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department, which coordinates the event.
‘It’s really, truly become a community event. I think every year it just gets better and better. We’re looking forward to it. Hopefully, the weather’s good.?
The three-day event includes a carnival, live music, fireworks, a community garage sale and access to park amenities including the KLR Splashpad, Kids Kingdom playground, 18-hole disc golf course and courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis.
All of the park’s normal amenities are free to use with the exception of the KLR Splashpad. Admission for that is $1 each for Oxford children and $4 for non-resident kids.
The carnival, which features more than 25 amusement park rides and activities, runs from 5-10 p.m. on Thursday and from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Armbands allowing visitors to enjoy all the rides for one day are available for $17 each if purchased at www.skerbeck.com before noon on June 26. After that, the armbands are $20 each and all sales are final.
There will be live musical performances from 7-9 p.m. on Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
A community garage sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Residents are invited to bring items to sell.
The cost is $10 for a 12-foot-by-12-foot space at the garage sale. Participants must preregister with the parks/rec. department and supply their own tents and tables.
As always, the Seymour Celebration will feature two consecutive nights of fireworks.
The Friday show will last 15 minutes while the Saturday show will run 30 minutes, according to Davis. Both shows will begin at dusk.
Parking is free for most of the Seymour Celebration with the exception of Friday and Saturday when vehicles entering the park after 7 p.m. will be charged $5.
Davis wished to remind festival-goers that all vehicles must enter from Seymour Lake Rd. and visitors are not permitted to bring either alcohol or fireworks into the park. Both are strictly prohibited by township ordinance.
Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling the premises during the event.
This year’s Seymour Celebration is sponsored by McLaren Oakland, Genisys Credit Union, Meijer, Oakland County Parks, the Oakland Press and the Oxford Leader.
