Last week Jerry Olrich, owner and president of Oxford Lumber Co., had lunch at the White House with President Clinton and Vice President Gore. He said the lunch was formal. It started with seafood consomme, then roast duck and spicy fruit, rice, carrots and a salad with fruit dish for desert.
A roomful of Taiwanese teachers learned about American innovations in education during a visit at Oxford High School.
The Department of Social Services administrative judge recommended the revoking of the day care license of Mary’s of Oxford Montessori.
Mark Lemke has sold his Mark of Oxford bakery to Steve Mihailovich who has 30-years experience.
Hank Paddubny, 70, has been named to the Michigan Trappers Association Hall of Fame. He owned Hank’s Better Bait on North Washington for 17 years before selling it 13 years ago.
Tim Kalohn, Oxford High senior, has qualified for the 1993 Maxfli PGA Junior championship tourney in Big Rapids.

Oxford Village Park has some new rules – no people between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.; no intoxicants anytime; no animals. Clerk Nancy Miller says the Park has become a “doggy potty.”
Duane Sprague is the new Post Commander of Walter Fraser Post 108, Oxford.
Fire caused major damage to the Amy Warren home on Leonard Road, Addison Township last Friday.
Also in Addison Township, Oakland County deputy sheriff Bud Lester reports a mobile home fire at Hidden Valley Estates. No one was home when the fire started.

The four major issues facing the Oxford Village Council are: Parking meters, back-in parking, alley purchase and water wells, according to village president Ted Pearson, Jr..
Mr and Mrs Brace Beemer (the radio Lone Ranger) entertained the entire cast of the show at their West Drahner Road home Sunday.
Gilbert Haven has been hired to teach at Lakeville School.

A spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation said M-24 in Oxford may be repaved this summer, but no other work will be done on the highway at that time.
Thomas School has been sold to Dr. Edward Grabenstein and his wife for $65,000.
Mike Goodfellow has been hired as Oxford High’s cross country coach. He replace Ray Sutherland.
Oxford hoopsters Owen Mihalyfi, Lowell Boyle, Jeff Cardona and Jeff Woods won the Gus Macker tournament in Port Huron last weekend.

Vince Butera is moving from the area, thus he’s resigned from the Oxford Village Council and the Village Planning Commission.
Wes Newmyer is the contractor on a new truck repair shop on Glaspie Street, and Industrial Machine Products is adding a warehouse addition to its facility at Church and Louck Streets.
A group of concerned citizens is pushing to make Delano Road a Natural Beauty Road to stop development.
School lunches have been raised a nickel, to 60 cents for elementary and 65 cents for secondary.
Mother Donna VanArsdel and daughter Nome VanArsdel have teamed up to act in Pontiac’s Theatre IV’s “Harvey.
Oxford Blue Jean 4-H girls won several equestrian honors at the annual County 4-H Fair. Vicky Axler, Michelle Gorelick, Lisa Starr, and Peg Williams won championships. 25 years ago

Janice Yonker won first chair for tenor saxophone at Interlochen Music Camp.
“Clarabell” one of the stars of the popular television show “Howdy Doody” will make an appearance at Brower and Streit Department Store August 22.
Oxford Schools will open September 9, though there is a shortage of elementary teachers.
Oxford Township has purchased the Holy Cross Lutheran Church on West Burdick Street for a site of a township hall.

On the third try the Oakland County Election Commission gave the nod to petition language to the recall of Addison Township superviser Bob Koski. He plans to appeal. North Area Citizen Conference brought the action.
Collier Lanes is undergoing a $100,000 renovation project, mostly to the business’ bar and restaurant areas.
Despite a million dollar savings account the Oxford Township Board of Trustees approved a $11,000 tax increase in the 1994 millage rate.

The Oxford Board of Education officially approved two bond issues for an October 3 vote. The $6.3 million issues would bring additions to both the High School and Junior High school.
Behind the pitching arm of Tommy McCollum, Oxford’s Boys League All Stars won their first championship in Armada, defeating Lake Orion 5-3.
Oxford Village officially offered to sell its water to Oxford Township.
The 50th anniversary of St. Joseph Catholic Church will be celebrated August 26.

Homer Hight, who was associated with Superior Auto Co. in Oxford from 1940 to 1950, has returned to Oxford and purchased a substantial interest in Superior Auto.
A new law allows farm machinery up to 160 inches wide to get permits for highway use.
The following Oxford students are in the All-state chorus: Gary Stewart, Roberta Stammann and Robert Woolcox. These students are in the All-state high school hand: Kay LaDouceur, Gary Stewart, and Janice Younkers.

First Assistant Fire Chief Jim Craig, an Oxford firefighter since 197 1, has been named acting chief in the wake of the resignation of former chief Fred Gill.
Camp Oakland “Boot Camp” on East Drahner Road, has sent its first class out into the world.
A $16,000 gift from Daniel Axford’s Parent Teacher Organization brought 10 new computers to the school’s library.
Angie Jenks, Shelly Halsey, Jennifer McMahon, Colleen Denning, Julie Simpson and Michelle Zells, all of Oxford, won ribbons at the County 4-H Fair.
Officers of Oxford High’s student council this school year are: president Liz Freeman, vice president Katie Courtright, secretary Jennifer Parkhill and treasurer Meredith Gailey.

Mel Larsen has become the official GOP candidate for Michigan Secretary of State. The Oxford Republican has vacated his state representative seat.
Roger Trimball and John Dolecek, both of Oxford, were jumped from behind, beaten and robbed while leaving a Detroit Lions exhibition game at the Silverdome.
Workers have completed four tennis courts at Mt. Grampian on Lakeville Road. Owner Rob Pillsworth is also building a restaurant.
Tom Schaible, Chris Ray and Phil Steele won their age brackets in the Oxford Youth Golf League Tournament.

More than 600 people attended Oxford Garden Club’s 19th annual Flower and Vegetable Show in the High School auditorium last weekend. There were 125 exhibitors.
Dr. and Mrs. Harold Brown have Doris Maria Gottshalk of Berlin, Germany as an exchange student.
Clyde Throop, Jr. was elected chairman of the Addison-Oxford Farm Bureau Friday.
Ashley’s Grocery in Oxford has tomatoes at 5 cents a pound, a peck for 35 cents.

The new state school-aid act is expected to cut about $700,000 to Oxford Schools.
The day-care license of Oxford Montessori school has been revoked, but the school has remained open.
Beverly Armsdon was sentenced Thursday to 320 years in prison for hiring someone to kill her husband, Willis.
A new feature of this year’s Oxford Pioneer Days, September 18-19, is a community steak dinner, sponsored by George Bubnes of Oxforfd Foodliner IGA. Also perfonning at Pioneer days are some Tennessee Walker horses.
Mike Gardner threw for one touchdown and ran for another in the Oxford Wildcats’ season opening win over Fenton, 27-6.

Negotiations between the Board of Education and the teachers’ union are going on as teachers continue picketing.
Architects really under estimated the cost of five elementary additions and remodeling the junior and senior high schools. The low bid left no money for the high schools. A committee will study what to do.
Oxford equestrians Mickey and Kathae North were big winners at the Armada Fair. Mickey was high point saddle seat rider and represented Macomb County in the state 4-H show. Kathae won the Klusendorf Memorial Trophy.
Despite a “no open alcohol” law in Oxford Village Park several empty beer bottles were found in the park over Labor Day weekend.

The Michigan Association of Township Officers is opposing a move to eliminate the township form of government. Those for the elimination say there is no longer any excuse for tolerating the expensive, politics-ridden township form of government.
Thieves broke into a large shovel at Ray Industries gravel operation and took some tools and broke windows.
The Oxford Baptist Church is adding an auditorium for educational purposes.

Oxford’s Dawn Furlong has been named to the county solid-waste committee. This group is to come up with a solid waste plan for the next 20 years,
Ted Fitch, Sally Thompson and Don Pike have ben named to replace Kathy Hoeflein, Nancy Miller and Richard Cork, respectively, on the Oxford Village Planning Commission.
Residents are being urged to get shots to avoid Beijing Flu.
The 115-year-old Immanuel Congregational Church is undergoing rather extensive restoration, like replacing 4,000 bricks.

Lady Wildcat sophomore Cheryl Erickson broke the Oxford High individual scoring record Friday against LakeVille with 28 points. LakeVille fell, 78-23.
Michigan Consolidated Gas operates a “sweetening” plant on Rochester Road, Leonard. Many residents don’t think the emissions are sweetened, anyway; the gas company has a permit to increase production 130 percent.
Oxford school district voters will be asked to approve two bond issues for $4.2 million to add to the junior and senior high schools.
Billy VanArsdel has approval to build a 32-unit motel at 823 S. Lapeer Road, Oxford.
Two Lake Orion youths were caught by Oxford police for allegedly breaking into Oxford High School.
Ernie Thompson, owner of Thompson Oil, bought Loy Sutherland’s Sutherland Oil Co. of Oxford Monday. Sutherland has been in business in this area 45 years.
Steven Sharp, 14, won the Grand Award in Cooking for Homemaking division at the Michigan State Fair. He won with a peanut brittle recipe.
West Campus choir director Mike Yaskanin’s group has been invited to Blue Lake Music Camp in September.

Oxford’s main street took on the air of a modern municipality as parking meters are being installed this week. Police began issuing warning tickets this week.
Effective today, October 2, purchasers of used cars will begin paying 3 percent sales tax (for cars bought from dealers) and 3 percent use tax for those buying from individuals.
Two Oxford boys, James Wiles and Richard Francis, are members of the Michigan State College marching band.
The Oxford Council approved installing proper safety and directional signs at Lakeville and Glaspie Streets.
