In an era where it seems everything is mass produced using cheap materials, there are still some businesses that believe in quality and craftsmanship.
Timber Grove is one of those places.
Located at 53 S. Washington (across from Oxford Bank), the store sells only “real wood furniture” such as tables, chairs, dressers, desks, porch swings, benches, bedroom sets, dining room sets and shelves.
“We don’t sell any particle-board, zero, none,” said Jay Alexander, who co-owns the store with his wife, Marsha.
The couple also owns The Yankee Carpenter in Lapeer, which sells the same items as Timber Grove.
All the store’s furniture inventory is made from solid woods such as oak, pine, maple, aspen and alder.
Alexander referred to the stock as “heirloom quality.”
“This is all stuff that can be handed down,” he said. “Kids can take their bed sets with them when they leave home because they know it’s going to last.”
The showroom offers a mixture of both finished and unfinished wood furniture.
Customers can either do the finishing themselves at home or rely on the store’s expert finishing department.
Timber Grove offers stains in 15 different colors and can “blend them to match an existing piece or room or color scheme in a house.”
Customers can also bring in their own stains and paints and have Timber Grove’s professionals finish their new furniture.
Timber Grove’s finishing department can also “distress” furniture to give it an antique look, Alexander said.
Besides furniture, Timber Grove also offers “fine accessories” such as pictures, clocks and lamps.
When asked why the couple chose to open a second location in Oxford, Alexander replied, “If you look up and down M-24, there are no furniture stores. There’s a couple in Lapeer, but people in Oxford usually have to go to Rochester or Troy to purchase furniture.”
Alexander noted that his wife and sister-in-law, Lorrie Ann Minock (who does custom floral arrangements), are both graduates of Oxford High School
“They like the area and wanted to get back here,” he said.
Timber Grove’s summer hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
