Independence Township contracted with the Road Commission for Oakland County for five chloride applications to secondary gravel roads in the township.
Township trustees also approved $3,500 to help residents pay to apply chlorine on private dirt roads, in which road maintenance is privately funded.
Under the program, residents can be reimbursed half the costs associated with application of chloride on private roads.
Township officials also help fund improvements like paving private roads. Under a Road Improvement Project, the residents on private streets can submit a petition requesting a special assessment district to fund improvements private streets.
Creating a special assessment district to participate in the program helps defray all or a portion of the costs of improvements.
Kittle also proposed another partnership between Independence Township and RCOC. The plan is to supply $250,000 in materials while the commission would provide equipment and labor. Funding for the project will come from the township’s $300,000-$400,000 surplus.
