The Oxford Leader newspaper continues a long-standing tradition of keeping area parents informed. Once again this year, The Leader is publishing Oxford Area Schools’ 2003 Bus Schedule. (See the “B” Section.)
“This is a community tradition that goes back over 30 years,” said Leader publisher Jim Sherman, Jr. “It is something many families come to expect.”
Publishing the schedules, however, didn’t come as easily as in past years. Apparently, last year a parent complained about publishing the schedule. Administrators decided this year they would only mail out cards to families with their individual routes. That decision was made last year, but The Leader was only informed of this last week. Assistant Publisher Don Rush requested the schedule via Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act. The schools provided printed copies of the schedule Tuesday afternoon.
“I’d like the thank the administration for approving the request,” Rush said. “This is a free service to the schools and we feel strongly that it is a good service to the community.”
Rush added he looks forward to working with the school administration in the future.
“Our number one beat is Oxford schools. Most of our newspaper is about our kids and their achievements.”
The Leader donates over 100 papers a week to the schools for student studies, designs and prints the high school newspaper and sports programs.
Members of The Oxford Leader staff speak at school events, give tours to student groups and allow students to “job shadow” throughout the school year.
Please see The Oxford Leader for a complete listing of the bus schedules.
