Summer’s out, school’s in for Brandon kids, staff

School bells rang throughout the Brandon school district Thursday, Aug. 21 as teachers and staff members welcomed students back to school.
The students can expect the same curriculum as in the past year, Superintendent Bart Jenniches said. However, he also said the district will address a couple key issues concerning parents and students:
nDispensing of medication: Jenniches said parents, if they haven’t already, will receive a copy of the district’s policy regarding the dispensing of medication at school.
nCell phone use: This summer, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a bill allowing students to carry cell phones in school. Currently, they are not allowed in the Brandon school district.
‘We’re going to maintain that policy until we take a look at it sometime during the first semester,? Jenniches said.
As far as student enrollment is concerned, Jenniches said more specific data will be available after the first week of school. However, he said he anticipates an enrollment increase at the secondary level (grades 7-12), while things should stay about the same at the elementary (grades K-4) and intermediate (grades 5-6) levels.
