The Oxford School Board accepted the resignation of Oxford High School Athletic Director Mike Watson on a 4-3 vote at the June 10 regular board meeting.
Board President Jim Reis, Treasurer Dan D’Alessandro and Trustee Kim Shumaker voted ‘no.?
When this reporter asked about his resignation, Watson replied via a June 12 e-mail, ‘The reasons for my resignation are personal and private to me and my family. I’m asking for your understanding and respect of that privacy.?
D’Alessandro originally made a motion to postpone the discussion, but it failed on a 4-3 vote.
‘I just feel as though, at this particular time there are some things that I am unclear of as to why we have gotten into this position with our athletic director,? D’Alessandro said. ‘I feel as though it would be important for the board to understand and I appreciate Superintendent (Tim) Throne’s position. But before we get into another situation, we may not be able to get out of I think it would be wise for us to have that discussion, wherever it leads us.?
Trustee Mike Schweig didn’t see a reason to table discussion.
‘Four months later, after a resignation has been requested we’re going to need to table it because we haven’t thought it through enough,? Schweig said. ‘I think we shouldn’t vote on the motion that’s currently on the floor.?
However, even though the board already accepted his resignation, Watson will be meeting with the board in a closed session tonight (June 17) to petition the board.
