Brandon Twp.- Summer is here and with it, perhaps some time for leisure reading.
The library, 304 South St., offers plenty of incentives to do just that with summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults.
‘The statewide (library summer reading program) theme is ‘Every Hero Has a Story,?? said Fran Hotchkiss, children’s librarian. ‘I tell older children they can be heroes by reading to younger kids and both can earn points for reading. Everyone can be a hero by reading to young children.?
Children, teens and adults are all encouraged to track their reading time and turn in their reading logs for prizes. Additionally, there will be weekly programs for children and teens centered around the hero theme, beginning June 24 with ‘Heroes A2Z? authors David Anthony and Charles David explaining how they became authors and created their books. The presentation is from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The same time frame will also be used every Wednesday for programs throughout the summer, including bingo on July 1; a showing of the movie ‘The Incredibles? on July 8 (10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.); Mike Brophy, a reptile expert on July 15; Tom Woodruff, an illustrator on July 22; local heroes vehicles stations on July 29; super hero super stations on Aug. 5; and the 36th annual Talent Show and Hot Dog Luncheon to wrap up the con-clusion of the summer reading program on Aug. 12.
Teens will be treated to multiple programs per week, including photo essay and comic contests that begin June 22; superhero movies from 2-4 p.m., June 24, July 8, July 29, and Aug. 12; International Mud Day from 2-4 p.m., June 29; ‘Learn How to Become a Hero? from 7-8:30 p.m., July 13; Heroes Unmasked Live Jeopardy! From 2-4 p.m., July 21; ice cream tasting from 2-3 p.m., Aug. 3 and much more.
The adult summer reading program is ‘Escape the Ordinary,? and readers can earn stamps for prizes. Top prizes are gift cards to Best Buy.
‘All the programs are fun, but what’s most important is just to be reading,? said Hotchkiss. ‘Our top (child) reader last year read 179 hours for the whole summer. We challenge everyone to read at least 15 minutes per day.?
