On Tuesday, June 9, the Stephen Ministry Group of Lake Orion United Methodist Church, with Oakland residents Bob and Gina Adams at the helm, held a Classic Car Show at the Lake Orion Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (LONRC) for the residents to enjoy.
Stephen Ministry is a group of men and women that go through formal training to be able to provide one-on-one lay Christian care to people that are going through a difficult time in their lives.
The training involves many things but focuses on learning how to be good listeners and how to reach out to people in a caring and loving way.
Last June, Lisa Goyette, the Director of the Stephen Ministry Program, wanted to further utilize the skill set of the 27 men and women that are a part of this ministry.
Goyette approached’Rene Howell, the Activities Director of the nursing home about having Stephen Ministers help out there.
Howell welcomed the support and Stephen Ministers now go to the nursing home to visit residents and help with social activities.
Stephen Minister Gina Adams is married to a classic car enthusiast Bob Adams.
The couple thought it would great to allow the residents an opportunity to share in the beauty of the cars so they put their ‘Wheels? in motion and organized the event.
They had 48 beautiful cars there for the residents to enjoy.
Many of the residents don’t like to get out but the weather that day for the car show was beautiful and they were wheeling around with huge smiles, eating popcorn and drinking lemonade.
They listened to the sounds of oldies music provided by DJ Paul Peters from Wixom who played? 1950’s tunes.
