Equestrian team wins regionals

The Wildcats are chasing a state championship.
The Oxford High School Equestrian Team has clinched its 15th consecutive trip to the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association State Championship.
The nine rider team will be competing in showmanship, western, huntseat, saddleseat, jumping and speed classes at the Midland County Fairgrounds Oct. 15-18.
‘I am so very proud of this team,? said head coach Dee Shepard. ‘They have not been afraid of hard work and putting forth the extra time and effort need to get them to this championship. The experience of competing in a state championship requires lots of focus and attention to every detail and aspect of their horsemanship. I believe these riders are ready to meet the challenge.?
Oxford earned 468 points Saturday and Sunday, earning the regional championship at the Ingham County Fairgrounds and a spot at the state meet. Second place Monroe earned 302 points.
Oxford competes in the B division, which includes teams with between five and 10 riders. The Wildcats outscored the larger division teams as well.
‘If we can continue to make improvements and fine tune a few of our weak areas these next two weeks, I think we definitely have a chance at the state title,? said assistant coach Kellie Roth. ‘The girls were able to stay focused despite weather conditions, and earned more points than any other team at the meet in all divisions. If they can continue with this momentum it is a great possibility.?
Freshman Hanna Buday was the high point rider for the Wildcats, earning 122 points. Senior Nicole Musgrove brought in 107 points.
‘The meet started off strong with our showmanship classes, making a large lead ahead of the other teams,? said assistant coach Jennifer Fifield. ‘I feel if we keep this momentum and dedication, we will be able to take home the state championship.?
