It seems Birmingham Seaholm has been chipping away at Lake Orion athletics throughout the 2015 season.
The Maples delivered Lake Orion’s volleyball team its first divisional loss and beat the girls cross country team by nearly 150 points.
But the boys? varsity soccer team stepped in to take their second win in a row from Seaholm on Monday.
Despite a sluggish start, the Dragons were able to score within the first five minutes when junior Collin Hachey scored the only goal of the night. Monday’s win gives Lake Orion an impressive win streak of 9-1 but it’s their seven ties that has coach Matt Paukovits focused.
‘It’s a kind of a mixed feeling, anytime you say we’ve only lost one game you have to be happy with that,? he said. ‘But there hasn’t been one game where we came out where we feel we’ve been lucky to tie.?
For Paukovits the wins are great, the losses are minimal, but the ties are still not wins. Their formula has been proven true by only allowing .64 goals a game while scoring two goals per game.
The foundation has been their defense, specifically their goal keeper senior Michael Chiaramonti who kept Seaholm scoreless for the entire 90 minutes.
This week Lake Orion has a full plate as they hosted Royal Oak High School on Tuesday, then they travel to Avondale on Thursday, and then to host Oxford for Districts on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The Dragons have a strong focus on defense and looking to attack having tied Oxford twice this season.
‘Our depth is a surprise, our overall talent level is good,? Paukovits said. ‘We’re a very good team defensively and if we can score goals we’ll be in very good shape.?
