Recently, I noticed the condition of a flag down the street. I watched the weary flag remain steadfast within her attempt to hold the weight of the nations integrity, firmly amidst her folds. I thought as I gazed at her glory, just how much she’s had to endure.
My Father is a World War II Veteran. He served our country during that war and fought in several key battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He fought for this country in order to maintain it’s founding principles. He continues to stand more proud of his experience and accomplishment there, than almost any other facet of his life.
I saw this flag and began to wonder …
We will revisit the memory of 911 this week. We will be reminded of the devastation that took our nation by surprise and attempted to set off kilter, the strength of our amazing freedom.
As we’ve walked through recovery, the character of our nation has been rebuilt one day a time. We’ve faced our adversaries and have been able to stand against the forces that have tried to gain victory over who America defines herself to be.
Our flag “The American Flag” is an amazing symbol of this very thing. She’s been by our side, waving diligently, holding the stripes of who we are, gently on her back. She’s endured freedom for our causes and delivers encouragement to a broken nation.
It was difficult to do, but gently, I tried to remind my neighbor of this.
The next day, the beauty that was faded to an almost unrecognizable disgrace, aged and torn, weary and nearly broken … was replaced. The crowing glory of a strong and amazing new flag was proudly displayed.
I reflected on the transition this country has made from one war to another, from facing a crisis head-on and with courage, finding the ability to build herself up again. In two day’s I was able to visualize the history that took years in the making. From broken to beautiful and again … I was filled with hope.
