Arts and Herbs, a holistic fair, set for Sept. 21

It’s a holistic approach to the traditional arts and crafts show.
The Herbs and Art Fair will feature 20 local artists displaying everything from garden decor, painted furniture, antiques, painted gourds, fresh and dried flowers, floral wreaths, herbal teas and more.
The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Oak Haven Farm in Holly, at the corner of Grange Hall and Dixie Highway.
“It’s a great atmosphere. It’s just relaxing here,” Sharon Matzelle, organizer of the fair, said of Oak Haven.
This is the fifth annual Herbs and Art Fair, but the first time held at Oak Haven.
“There will be a lot of holistic things, a lot of handmade, one-of-a-kind items.”
Matzelle, who co-owns Thyme in the Bottle, an herbal greenhouse and garden store in Clarkston, will have herbal vinegars, baskets, herbal teas, fresh flowers and herbs available at the fair.
Others showcasing work include Laura Wall, of Independence Township and owner of Laura Wall Hand Painting. She will have a variety of antique furniture available for purchase. “These are items I’ve found in disrepair and tried to bring back so they are structurally okay. They have a Pennsylvania-Dutch feel. There’s a lot of earth tones.” Many of the pieces date into the 1700’s and 1800’s, and Wall provides a bit of historical information on each item.
Her husband, Richard Mason is a photographer and will showcase many of his framed photographs, typically shots of farm animals and flowers, and mostly in black and white.
Students from Oakland Technical Center will be selling succulents, herbal bath oils and harvest table arrangements.
The fair’s special guest is Colleen Dodt, author of “The Essential Oils Book and Natural Baby Care,” and co-author of “Herbal Well Being.”
“She’ll be selling her books, signing and will be available to answer people’s questions,” Matzelle said. “She’s very knowledgeable on herbs.”
Also at the fair, appetizers and recipes will be supplied by “Whole Foods” of Rochester, and there will drawings to win tickets and gift certificates to the farm.
“The best things is there’s something for the kids, something for mom, and something for the whole family,” Matzelle said.
Oak Haven features a petting zoo, ice cream parlor, cider and donuts and more.
