It was a good day for the local high school girls tennis teams.
At the Goodrich Invitational Sept. 20, the Brandon tennis squad took first place with a total of 56 points, beating out second-place Flint Kearsley, which had 39 points. Goodrich was right behind Kearsley, finishing third with 38 points.
The Blackhawks took first place at #3 singles and #4 singles, as well as #2 doubles, #3 doubles and #4 doubles, and took the runner-up spot at #1 doubles. Meanwhile, the Martians took first place in #1 singles and #2 singles, and second in #3 singles and #4 doubles.
In a Sept. 18 Flint Metro League match, the visiting Holly Bronchos shut out the Blackhawks 8-0.
In singles competition, Amy Palmgren defeated Nicole Barth at #1 singles 6-0, 6-0; Courtney Yee defeated Jessica Sanday at #2 singles 6-0, 6-1; Hayley Meacham defeated Amanda Bohr at #3 singles 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; Michelle Leone defeated Monica Lambert at #4 singles 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, Christi Hernandez and Lindsey Nelson defeated Nicole Schurke and Michelle Ashford at #1 doubles 6-1, 6-2; Stephanie Deneau and Ginny Blakely defeated Danie Ashford and Elizabeth Bilbey at #2 doubles 6-1, 6-0; Jenni McGinnis and Heather Price defeated Susan Gajdos and Christa Nedry at #3 doubles 6-1, 6-0; Cynthia Stevens and Jamie Sesock defeated Lisa Stach and Holly Gerber at #4 doubles 6-0, 6-0.
Brandon takes part in the Flint Metro League meet Sept. 30 at 8 a.m., while Goodrich travels to Gabriel Richard Oct. 2.
