Response to a recent bat house making class in Orion Township was so good that the Friends of Bald Mountain is considering holding more classes in the near future, according to Friends member Rosalie Ward.
The inaugural class was held on Oct. 2 at the Bald Mountain State Recreation Area Park Headquarters, and about 110 people from across Oakland County gathered to learn more about bats and bat house construction.
Enough wood was available to make 38 houses, at a cost of $5 to each resident participating to cover the materials. Residents were then able to take their completed bat house home with them. The proceeds from the project go back to the Friends of Bald Mountain.
“We had so many people that we are probably going to have another class,” said Ward. Anyone interested in finding out if and when another class might be held can contact the Friends of Bald Mountain by calling Bald Mountain State Recreation Area at 693-6767.
Bat houses have been a hot topic in the news recently, as they present a possible way to help combat West Nile Virus, passed through mosquitoes, which bats eat. Participants in the Bald Mountain workshop were shown an informational video about bats and bat houses before the class began.
