Goodrich School District has many closets.
But one closet at Goodrich Middle School is rather unique—it’s all about helping students.
The small room is known as Rachel’s Closet and it’s purpose is to ensure that every student has the clothing they need.
Inspired by Rachel Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999, the closet is designed to reach out to students in the district who may need an article of clothing. Organized through the Friends of Rachel Club at the high school, about 15 students along with Kapeka von Keltz, Goodrich Middle School principal helped with the closet this year.
The closet actually began as Rachel’s Challenge based on doing acts of kindness that leave a lasting legacy.
“Sometimes there’s a perception that students here in Goodrich don’t need a little help with clothing, shoes or some small item,” said von Keltz. “It’s not true. The demographics of the community has changed and our economy has not been always been that great—parents lose jobs and students need some help at times.”
The closet opened in March and since then a steady flow of clothes have come into the school.
“It’s full of donations such as new backpacks, school supplies and coats,” said Kyle Gavulic, senior mentor. “I’ve known students that come to school that wear the same clothes everyday. The great thing about Rachel’s Closet is it’s completely confidential—students just let a counselor know or a teacher know.”
A donation receptacle for clothing, footwear and personal hygiene products is located at GMS.
