The Goodrich boys golf team just didn’t have their ‘A? game at the Division 3 state golf finals.
The Martians missed the cut after the first day of action at the finals, held at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing Oct. 17-18.
The Martians finished with a team score of 330, one behind Spring Lake, Hanover-Horton and Charlevoix, each of whom shot 329 to make the cut.
Grosse Ile won the Division 3 championship with a team score of 591, while Lansing Catholic Central finished second (615) and Jackson Lumen Christi third (621).
Charlie Richards led the Martians with a round of 79, followed by Phil Holloway (80), Jared Swanson (84), Nick McElrath (87) and Ben Richards (89).
Despite the disappointing showing, Goodrich coach Doug Wilson said the Martians gave it everything they had.
‘We were surprised and disappointed we didn’t make the cut,? he said. ‘We didn’t feel we played near what were capable of. They played their hardest, but it wasn’t their best game on that given day.?
With only two seniors graduating (Holloway and McElrath), Wilson said the future looks bright for the Martians.
‘We’ll be in good shape,? he said. ‘There was a lot of competition to determine the five players that went to regionals and finals. There will be guys ready to step up and compete. The juniors gained valuable experience in the playoffs, which will help us next year. It will be a very experienced group ? we’ll have a lot of seniors next year.?
