The Lake Orion girls ended Clarkston’s seven-year-old hold on the Pine Knob Divisional Ski Title on Feb. 5, edging the Wolves for the 2004 victory.
Led by senior Kristen Thulin (third in the slalom and giant slalom), the Dragons led with 64 points, followed by Clarkston with 66 and Cranbrook/Kingswood with 70. The three teams led their 10-team field to represent the Pine Knob Division in the South Eastern Michigan Ski League (SEMSL) finals on Feb. 17 at Alpine Valley.
Also scoring for the Dragons were Jessica Hutchison (sixth in the giant slalom, fourth in the slalom), Katelyn Rivers (14th in the giant slalom), Kristen Fleming (sixth in the slalom, 15th in the giant slalom), and Camille Seybert (13th in the slalom).
The Lake Orion boys, after suffering key falls in the slalom and setting in fifth place heading into Thursday’s giant slalom event, finished second in the giant slalom. The team finished third overall and qualified for the SEMSL finals, along with Clarkston (first place) and Cranbrook (second place).
Dragon senior Teddy Tarr finished seventh in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom. Scott Arsen was 10th in the slalom, while Marty Tarr scored with a 15th-place finish in the slalom and a ninth-place finish in the giant slalom. James Hubbard finished 11th in the giant slalom.
Both squads competed in the OAA I finals on Feb. 9, and head to the state regional finals on Feb. 12 at Mt. Holly.
The Dragon girls will be attempting to qualify for their third consecutive state final (fourth in five years), and the boys are aiming to become only the second team to qualify for five consecutive Class A final appearances. Only Marquette has qualified for five consecutive state finals.
