Lake Fenton — On June 1, Flint Metro League Champion Goodrich Martian Girls Softball team eked out a 2-1 win in D2 action over the Linden Lady Eagles for the district crown at Lake Fenton. The Martians, 33-4-1 will now play June 8 in the first round of regional competition.
GHS pitching ace Jayden Gohs edged out Linden hurler Kayla Widner for the win as the Martians scored single runs in the third and fifth innings and held on to earn the victory.
“The girls played a couple of good games,” said Head Coach Don Peters. “Especially in the second game against Linden, it was a tough game and really good hitting. The girls hung in there and scored a couple of runs. Jayden pitched phenomenal.”
“They are a very good team, very cohesive, play together and play hard,” he said.
Gohs was the winning pitcher with 13 strikeouts, no walks and one earned run, giving up just seven hits. She threw 81 of her 111 pitches for strikes.
GHS Ella Swanson had one RBI and GHS Julia Keller had the game winning RBI scoring GHS Ava Mazich.
“We squeaked out a win,” he said. “There’s some tough teams out there heading into into the regionals. This team did not happen overnight, they play so well together.”
LHS Widner pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13 batters. However, seven walks and a hit batter hurt her cause. Gohs did the opposite. She walked none but did allow seven hits.
