Atlas — Heavy tropical rain from Hurricane Beryl soaked southeastern Michigan from late Tuesday night through Wednesday according to the National Weather Service. The local moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the southern states produced flooding in some areas of southeastern Michigan.
“There was a lot of moisture with the storm,” said Sara Schultz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake. “In Oakland County there was anywhere from 2 to 4 inches rain during the last 24 hours. In Genesee and into Lapeer counties is where it was hit the hardest, with 5 to 7 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. There was a report of 6.5 in Atlas.”
Schultz said Wednesday’s heavy rainfall was compounded by a storm on Tuesday that parked over Southern Genesee County and saturated the ground.
“That area just kept getting hit,” she said. “The unique storm also had some winds along with it of over 30 miles per hour. With the ground soaked the high winds took down many trees down too.”
