15 years ago – 1994
‘Injuries in Monday’s apartment fire? Nine fire departments responded to a fire that gutted a 36-unit apartment complex in Independence Township. Firefighters drew water from a nearby lake and pond to help extinguish the blaze. Residents escaped without injury.
‘Alleged stalker ordered to stand trial? District Judge Gerald McNally ordered the Clarkston suspect to stand trial for threatening his ex-girlfriend with a knife and leaving threats on her answering machine.
‘A new place to play? Volunteers armed with pitchforks, shovels, and rakes moved mounds of woodchips and gravel from DPW trucks to Depot Park’s playground. The renovation was mostly funded by local donations.
‘Goin? for a ride? Six-year-old Benjamin Chaloner of Clarkston took his mother’s 1985 Honda for a short ride. The car hit a neighbor’s house, but the boy wasn’t hurt.

25 years ago – 1984
‘Senior complex site dropped? After investing thousands into site plans and engineering, developers abandoned plans for a $30 million senior citizen complex at Dixie and I-75, on 26 acres shared by Independence and Springfield townships. They said the site was too small, and were considering two other sites in Independence Township.
‘Significant finds at mastodon dig? Volunteers and students worked in four-foot-deep trenches, delicately scooping shovelfuls of dirt. They had uncovered a foot-long jaw with fist-size teeth and three back vertebrae from a 12,000-year-old mastodon.
‘Married 25 years, couple has 65 foster kids? Jim and Carolann Reed decided to take foster children into their home 11 years before, raising and teaching dozens of babies and older kids.

50 years ago – 1959
‘Chance to see U.S. Navy ships? Destroyers U.S.S. Willis Lee, U.S.S. J.P. Kennedy, and U.S.S. Warrington, and submarine U.S.S. Sablefish were set to stop by Detroit’s Civic Center piers.
‘Clarkston Pioneers to have picnic? The group planned a potluck picnic at the home of George Harris on Main Street. Following the picnic luncheon was to be an afternoon of games.
‘Clarkston local? Harry D. Waggener hosted for Clarkston Rotarians a pontoon and motorboat ride around Deer Lake. All had a grand time.
