A 20-year-old Grosse Pointe Shores man is facing multiple criminal charges for allegedly burglarizing a home in Addison Township.
It took three separate shots from Taser stun guns and the powerful jaws of a police dog to finally apprehend the alleged burglar, James William-Ellis Wilson, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.
Wilson was arraigned Thursday, Sept. 23 in Rochester Hills 52-3 District Court on charges of first-degree home invasion (a 20-year felony); assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer (a two-year felony); receiving and concealing stolen property (a one-year misdemeanor); and harassing a police animal (a one-year misdemeanor).
He’s currently being held in the Oakland County Jail in lieu of posting a $25,000 cash or surety bond.
According to the sheriff’s department, Wilson allegedly broke into a home in the 200 block of Baywood on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
When the homeowner returned around 3 p.m., she heard a noise inside the house, so she exited the residence. That’s when she saw Wilson allegedly running out the back.
Wilson ran into the house next door and allegedly hid from police in the attic. The home belongs to some of Wilson’s relatives and he was temporarily living there.
Deputies ordered Wilson to exit the attic, but he refused to comply, according to the sheriff’s department.
A deputy went into the attic after Wilson and when the suspect allegedly refused to surrender himself, the officer shot him with a Taser stun gun.
Despite being stunned, Wilson was able to exit the attic through a second access point and escape from the home, sheriff’s officials said.
While outside, Wilson was shot with a Taser gun again and attacked by a police dog.
Wilson was able to free himself from the canine by allegedly punching and kicking the animal.
A third Taser shot finally allowed Wilson to be subdued and handcuffed, sheriff’s officials said.
The items Wilson allegedly stole from the home ? a pair of earrings, iPad and iPod ? were all recovered.
Some property reported stolen from automobiles in Macomb County was also recovered.
Wilson was taken to the POH Regional Medical Center in Pontiac where his dog bites were treated. He was then lodged in the county jail.
Sheriff’s officials indicated Wilson is a heroin addict who was kicked out of his mother’s home in Grosse Pointe Shores.
Wilson was reported to be staying in Addison while waiting to enter a rehabilitation facility.
