Goodrich – A therapeutic horse riding center, ‘Amazing Wings? is a place where owner Judi Pearce believes faith and freedom reign.
Amazing Wings, 9500 S. State Road, is located on 70 partially wooded acres with horse trails that lead to Lake Shinanguag.
‘People with cerebral palsy, autism, Down Syndrome and closed head injuries do well with this kind of therapy,? said Pearce. ‘Children love riding our horses with our highly trained personnel who lead them to the lake where they can dip their toes in the water. This kind of program can make a profound difference in people’s lives.?
A Christian-based environment, Pearce said her staff starts each day out with a prayer hoping God’s peace and love will touch everybody that comes to Amazing Wings.
‘God has sent me the very best staff,? said Pearce.
The highly trained staff includes Kelly Barry, equine director, Barbara Oprea, equine development specialist, Jessica Moore, N.A.H.R.A. (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) certified instructor and Amy Walker, occupational therapist.
The ranch has 12 horses, including quarter horses, Belgian Cross, Arab and gypsy saddle horses.
‘We also have three miniature horses named Eeyore, Tucker and Rambo,? said Pearce.
Since 1969, N.A.H.R.A. has provided equine assisted activity and therapy programs in the United States and Canada through its network of nearly 800 member centers.
‘We are N.A.H.R.A. approved,? said Pearce. ‘That means we are held to a very high standard of excellence.’Pearce said it took four years to renovate the property. ‘We created an environment especially for people who have special needs,? said Pearce. ‘The mounting ramp was built for wheelchairs.?
Pearce said the ramp is used for anyone who wants to mount a horse in a safer and easier way.
‘I said to someone recently, ‘Every time I see an accomplishment on a child’s face, I can’t help but cry.? This kind of business is extremely emotional but very rewarding,? said Pearce.
