A 55-year-old Brandon Township man was restoring a 1911 handgun July 22 when he accidentally shot himself in the leg.
According to police reports, a Brandon deputy responded to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital to interview the man who was wounded when the bullet entered the front of his left leg near the knee and exited behind the knee.
The man said he restores antique guns as a hobby. At around 5 p.m. at his home in the 1100 block of Briar Ridge, he was working on the rusty, .45 caliber handgun, which had a round lodged in the barrel. He attempted to eject the round by pulling the slide back and when he released it with the round still inside, it fired, striking him in the leg.
The man told the deputy he did not feel the wound was too bad, so he decided he would wait until his wife came home to determine if he needed to go to the hospital. His niece help him wrap the wounds. The man’s wife said she called him as she left work and he told her about the accidental shooting. When she arrived home, she told him he needed to go to the hospital.
