If at first you don’t succeed, try again in November.
That’s what the Addison Township Public Library is doing with regard to its millage request following its 585-517 failure in the Aug. 5 primary election.
At a special meeting Tuesday morning, the library Board of Trustees voted to put the 10-year millage request back on the ballot in the Nov. 4 general election, but with one change. Officials lowered the amount they’re requesting from 0.25 to 0.2 mill.
‘We certainly don’t want to ask for too much in this economic climate,? said Library Director Jaema Berman. ‘We feel that perhaps, voters will look more favorably (on) this request and support us.?
She noted that of the 1,145 Addison residents who voted in the primary, 43 did not mark ‘yes? or ‘no? on the library’s proposal.
‘There were four millages on the ballot,? Berman said. ‘Ours might have just got lost in the shuffle.?
Berman said this millage is needed to help offset the loss of tax revenue the library’s experienced due to declines in property values.
‘We lost over $40,000 in the last five years,? Berman said. ‘We’re at the point where we would just like to replace what we’ve lost.?
If approved, the new 10-year millage would be levied in addition to the library’s perpetual 0.57-mill tax and used to help supplement the institution’s operations and maintenance.
