Bishop helps promote reading month

To help promote ‘March Is Reading Month? in Michigan schools, Senate Majority Leader Michael D. Bishop (R-Rochester) donated a book to each elementary school in the 12th Senatorial District and encouraged fellow senators to do the same.
Auburn Hills-based EDCO Publishing Inc. has provided more than 2,000 copies of ‘Rock U.S.A. and the American Way,? for distribution in Michigan schools.
Written by the award-winning Edna Cucksey Stephens and illustrated by Mark J. Herrick, the book takes readers on a patriotic journey through the alphabet and encourages them to pursue their American Dream.
‘Instilling a love for reading opens children up to new opportunities and prepares them for successful futures,? Bishop said.
‘Reading stimulates the imagination and strengthens the mind. For a child to develop a love of literature, we must all invest ourselves in the educational process, get involved in our schools and spend time reading with our children.?
A recent recipient of the Michigan Reading Association’s Literacy Individual of the Year Award, Stephens said, ‘Both Senator Bishop and I have strong beliefs about the importance of literacy and education to the future of our state.?
‘I think it is important for everyone to do his or her part to promote literacy.?
