Bay City — On Aug. 24 the Brandon Blackhawk Varsity Football team defeated Bay City John Glenn Bobcats 51-12 on the road in the season opener.
“Despite a two hour delay, the boys kept their focus and came out ready to go,” said Head Coach Brad Zube. “Bay City John Glenn was a big physical team, they gave us their best shot for about a quarter and half. There’s things we can do better on both sides of the ball, but overall good performance.”
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 29-12 halftime lead and tacked on 22 in the third quarter for the win following a two hour weather delay. It was an aerial attack with 259 yards receiving and 149 yards on the ground in a non-conference match-up.
“We run a lot of run-pass-options,” said Zube. “If the run is not there, the quarterback knows to pull it and throw the ball. They were playing tight to stop the run. We took what the defense gave us.”
Junior quarterback Lance Briolat threw for 178 yards and completed 11 of 19 passes including four touchdowns en route to the win. Junior Drew Hickmott caught the ball six times for 99 yards and two touchdowns, Senior Austin Simonsen carried the ball 14 times for 58 yards and one touchdown. He also caught two passes for 46 years and one touchdown. Junior Danny Protiva had two carries and 26 yards including one touchdown.
