Board aims to dump 170-acre Groveland Twp. land deal

The school board was expected to vote on Thursday to terminate a purchase agreement for a 170-acre parcel in Groveland Township for future school site expansion.
Brandon School Board President Greg Allar said funding for the purchase, an estimated $2 million, would have come from the bond extension funds that includes a line-item for school land acquisition. The street address of the property was not disclosed, nor were the property owners.
The purchase was discussed with school attorneys during a closed session on Monday following the regular school board meeting, and comes after the land consideration was first disclosed in July.
‘We thought the district were ‘good to go? with the land purchase,? said Allar. ‘We are still reviewing the site, however we have to be mindful of our total budget. Right now we don’t have all the projects completed and we need to complete those projects that have the greatest impact on students. If there is money left over, the property will be re-considered.?
Allar said the economy requires the board to be more cautious right now and maintain the $73 million bond extension passed by voters in 2006.
‘The bond project is ahead of schedule and on budget’that’s where we have to stay until the projects are completed.?
