Brandon Twp.- A new vision statement for the school district focuses on the role technology plays in the education of today’s students.
The school board unanimously approved the vision statement, five guiding principles, and three primary goals for the district during their Jan. 16 meeting.
Superintendent Lorrie McMahon said the statement was updated for the first time in about six years mainly due to ‘our understanding that technology is a common tool for education, as opposed to brand new, and 21st century skills are guiding instruction much more than they were six years ago.?
‘We use technology in a much broader sense,? she continued. ‘Education is not focused as much on specific content as on critical thinking, the ability to write critically and expressively, and problem solving under any circumstance, not just in class.?
McMahon and the school board formulated the new vision with the help of Joan Sergent, former Utica School District superintendent.
The statement reads: ‘In partnership with family and community, Brandon School District strives to be at the forefront of education excellence, preparing our students to be successful, productive citizens.?
McMahon explained that the vision statement will guide the district’s financial and curriculum decisions.
Also adding clarity to decisions will be the five guiding principles approved:
1. Student acheivement is Brandon School District’s highest priority; 2. The primary responsibility of the Brandon Board of Education is to provide optimal conditions for teaching, learning and effective internal and external communication; 3. Decisions made by members of the Brandon Board of Education are based on the best interests of all students; 4. Measuring, benchmarking and monitoring student results through a comprehensive, multiple assessment system that enhances teaching and learning is a key component of student success; and 5. Brandon School District’s facilities must be secure, well-maintained and ensure an environment conducive to successful teaching and learning.
The three goals of the Brandon Board of Education will be to improve student achievement in all grades, ensure responsible fiscal stewardship, and improve district communication.
