Dear Editor,
Spring has not exactly sprung, but it is creeping up on us. In addition, with the advent of spring comes the annual ‘One Day Spring Yard Clean Up for Senior Citizens and the Disabled.? As in prior years, our young people will volunteer in droves on April 26 to rake, bag debris, weed flowerbeds, wash windows and perform general yard cleanup.
In 2007, we had more than 100 youth and adult volunteers and 23 yards. Chesnutt Outdoor Services and Metropolitan Tree Service donated a full day of their services to pick up all the yard debris and trim trees.
The homeowners reap the benefit of these young volunteers who work their butts off and ask for more work to do. In the long run though, the young people themselves and the community benefit more because they experience the satisfaction that only comes when you serve others, when you make a difference in someone’s life. In addition, these young people continue to volunteer in the community as adults and eventually pass those values on to their own children.
I run this program in partnership with Rebuilding Together, a national agency that performs home repair one day each year in local communities. This year, they are not funded for home repair in Brandon Township but have agreed to provide shirts and possibly a small contribution toward the cost of lunch.
Last year, I served hot dogs, chips, soda, water and cookies in Crossman Park through donations from the community and a perfect, rain-free spring day. Details: Clerk’s office, 248-627-2851, cell phone 248-931-0402, email jmccreery@brandontownship.us. Need yard work? Call 248-627-6447.
