Brandon track opens league season with mixed results

Brandon’s track teams nearly made it a clean sweep in their Apr. 4 Flint Metro League opener.
However, while the girls team soundly defeated host Clio 116-21, the boys team was edged out by the Mustangs 72-64.
Despite the loss, the Brandon boys team had several wins in individual and relay events. In field events, two Blackhawks were triumphant, as Mitch Walker won the discus with a throw of 115?4?, while Josh Papineau won the shot put with a throw of 39?10?.
In distance events, Nick Mackie captured the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.2 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.8. Other individual event winners were Jawan Simpson in the 100 meter dash (11.7) and Adam George in the 3,200 meter run (11:15).
In addition, the 800 meter relay team of Chris Ritchie, Steven Webber, Stefon Johnson and Simpson finished first with a time of 1:44.7.
The Blackhawk girls dominated against the Mustangs, winning 14 of 17 events. Clio’s Tatianna Canady prevented the Blackhawks from sweeping the meet by winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.
Other than that, it was all Brandon. In field events, Sarah Bond notched two first-place finishes, one in the shot put (33?4?) and the other in the discus (121?4?). Danielle Westphall won the long jump (12?6?), while Savannah Stedman won the high jump (4?6?) and Megan Ostrowski took the pole vault (6?).
Brandon’s Janessa Farr swept the two hurdles events, winning the 100 meters (18.23) and the 300 meters (54.5). Kayla Doan also won two events for the Blackhawks, capturing the 1,600 meter run (6:19.5) and the 800 meter run (2:48.8).
Kelsey Carmean was the other Brandon competitor to win an individual event, taking the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:50.
The Blackhawks swept all four relay events against the Mustangs. The Brandon relay teams, along with their winning times, are as follows:

?800 meters ? Fahr, Corey Auger, Sara Jones and Heather Chewning, 2:09.
