Earth Day
Goodrich-Sandy Gallaher, owner of The Amber Butterfly, 8161 State Road, is hosting a drawing contest to commemorate Earth Day, April 22. Everyone in the community is invited to draw a picture on an eight-by-12 standard piece of paper about what Earth Day means to them. The Earth Day observance is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. A portion of the proceeds, Gallaher said, will be given to the Arbor Day Foundation. The deadline for entries is April 12. Winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22. The winner’s picture will be reproduced onto a T-shirt. Details: Sandy Gallaher, (810) 636-2506.

Atlas Twp.-The Goodrich High School 2008 State Wrestling Champions will be recognized by adding the accomplishment to the two ‘Welcome to Goodrich? signs located on Irish Road and Baldwin Road. The township board OK’d the funding for the project at the March 24 board meeting. The Genesee County Road Commission will complete the project this spring. The Martians won the state crown on March 1 in Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena. It was the school’s first-ever wrestling state title.

Volunteer club
The Downtown Development Authority in Ortonville is looking for volunteers who have a knack for organization, writing newsletters, managing a database, networking with business people, and/or love working on community entertainment events. Details: 248-627-8070.

Good Times in
Goodrich
An organizational meeting for the annual ‘Good Times in Goodrich? festival will be at 6 p.m. on April 3 at Cranberries Cafe?, 10250 Hegel Road. All interested people are invited to attend. Details:810- 636-3409.

Woodie Flowers Award
Anthony Lapp, 27, a Groveland Township resident and 1999 Brandon High School graduate, recently earned the Woodie Flowers Award for the Detroit Regional.
The award is presented to an outstanding mentor participating in each of the FIRST Robotics regional competitions.
Students select and write about a person on their team who best shows excellence in teaching science, math, and creative design. Lapp will now compete for the National Woodie Flowers Award held in Atlanta, April 17. Lapp is a 2004 graduate of Michigan Technological University and is currently employed at American Axle.

Critter Catchers
Ortonville-based Critter Catchers, Inc. recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Laura Hohman, an Indiana State University biology major and master’s degree candidate, to study bat houses and the most effective utilization of bat structures. Hohman works in conjunction with the Center for North American Bat Research and the Organization for Bat Conservation.
Critter Catchers is a local wildlife and bat removal firm founded by village resident David Kugler.

Edible book
Eat your words at the edible book contest from 7-9 p.m. April 1 at the Brandon Township Library, 304 South St. Pick up an entry form at the adult services desk. Think of a book title, opening line, picture, illustration, or a play on words, then recreate it with something edible.
All work must be done at home. Bring the creation to the library no later than 6:30 p.m., April 1. Details: 248-627-1461.
