A mother who can’t understand why the school district is not changing a bus stop that’s allegedly in front of a sex offender’s house, recently found out why.
Other parents in the neighborhood want to keep the bus stop right where it is, according to Lake Orion School District Assistant Superintendent Dave Beiter.
Forty four families signed a petition and returned it to Beiter, asking the bus stop not be changed.
Beiter said he hasn’t yet been able to get a hold of two other families.
According to Beiter, the mother’s child wasn’t originally assigned to the bus stop in question. She had asked her child be moved because the original stop was too far to walk to.
Since she contacted school district officials, another bus stop has been established closer to the woman’s home.
Beiter said he contacted the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and was told the sex offender hasn’t been seen in the area for eight months. He allegedly uses his brother’s home as his official address listed on the sex offenders? website.
‘If the parents change their minds or if there’s conflicts, we will pull the bus stop,? Beiter added.
He did say he visited the site and found numerous parents at the bus stop waiting with their children to board the school bus.
According to Beiter, the school district plans on installing additional software next year that will help the school district not create any bus stops within 500 feet of questionable addresses such as those of sex offenders or plants that may contain hazardous material.
