Commercial vehicle safety inspections
Atlas Twp.-Inspections for trucks and other commercial vehicles will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug.10 at the township hall, 7386 Gale Road. The inspections will be available on each second and fourth Saturday of the month until November. Vehicles passing will receive the required annual safety inspection sticker. of the Year named
Patty Plant, owner of Cranberries Cafe? in Goodrich, has been named the ?2008 Business Associate of the Year? by the The American Business Women’s Association.
The Crossroads Connection Chapter of Grand Blanc honored Plant on June 18 at the Flint Golf & Country Club.

Paper retriever
Beginning July 25, a paper retriever will be located in the parking lot of the Groveland Township offices, 4695 Grange Hall Road. The paper retriever bin will take newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office and school papers as a step in the environmental stewardship program. Funds raised from recycling the paper will be sent to the Ortonville Community Emergency Fund program. There will be a paper drive for the week of Sept. 8 -12. Details: 248-634-4152.

Detroit Tigers
The Brandon Township Parks and Recreation is taking registration for the Detroit Tigers versus the Oakland A’s on Aug. 9. The tickets are $56 per person and include the game ticket, luxury motor coach transportation, an upper lounge pizza party and a fireworks display. The bus leaves Brandon Middle School at 5 p.m., the game starts at 7:05 p.m.

Postage increase
In just two weeks, a postage rate increase will hike the cost of a first-class letter by a penny, to 42 cents, according to the United States Post Office. Other May 12 price increases affect standard mail, periodicals, package services, and special services, say United States Post Office officials.
‘The ‘forever? stamps are currently selling for 41 cents,? said Danete VanLandeghem, Goodrich Post Office sales associate. ‘The stamp will remain valid for full postage after the increase. The price of the forever stamp does not have a denomination.?
The U.S. Postal Service estimates Americans are buying 30 million ‘forever? stamps a day. More than 6 billion ‘forever? stamps have been sold since they were introduced last year. The USPS sold $267.7 million worth of them in March, up from $207.9 million in February and $115.3 million in January.

Supervisor candidate
Atlas Twp. – A Goodrich resident since 1980, Shirley Kautman-Jones has filed her petition to run for Atlas Township supervisor. She was a Goodrich school board trustee from 1994 to 2003 and is the owner of Country Home Creations.

Domestic violence ordinance
Brandon Twp.- The township board had the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting domestic violence during their April 21 meeting.
Township Clerk Jeannie McCreery said that while punishment for domestic violence is already a state law, an ordinance will allow township deputies to issue tickets at the scene ordering offenders to appear in court. Currently, deputies have to first obtain warrants through the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Michael Nanzer of Clarkston was inducted into International Honor Society of Beta Gamma Sigma at Wayne State University’s School of Business Administration.
To be eligible for invitation, juniors must be in the top 7 percent of their class; seniors in the top 10 percent of their class; and graduate students in the top 20 percent of their graduating class. This year, forty students were inducted into the honor society.
BGS membership is the highest recognition a business student can receive in a baccalaureate or master’s program at a school accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The mission of BGS is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business,

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation has awarded the E. Wayne Kay Co-Op Scholarship to Monica C. Denis of Clarkston. Denis is pursuing a degree in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering at Kettering University.
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation provided over $380,000 in 2006 scholarships.

Chase has promoted Michele Peterka of Clarkston to Midwest retail investment sales manager.
Based at Chase’s Somerset office in Troy, she manages 180 advisors and more than 400 bankers who have securities licenses.
Peterka relocated to Michigan from Chicago. Most recently, she served as market manager for retail investment sales in Chicago’s western suburbs. She was responsible for 100 financial advisors serving customers in 86 branches.
She began her career with Chesterton State Bank in 1988. She became a financial advisor in 1991 and was a top-producing financial advisor for eight years. She also served as a wholesaler, selling the firm’s investment funds through other financial advisors and licensed personal bankers.
