Lady Hitters finished the regular season with one of the best Flint Metro League records in recent memory when they took third place.
The Varsity Softball team took sole possession of third after sweeping Holly and Brandon last week and before dropping to the FML champions Lapeer West on Saturday.
The Wildcats finished with a 12-6 record.
‘We had a great week of softball,? said Head Coach Kristi McDevitt. ‘The girls really pulled through this week with the defeat of Linden, county-ranked Ortonville Brandon, and then Holly. Our momentum couldn’t carry us to the weekend when we never fully stepped up to the plate against West.?
Oxford only needed one win to secure a tie for second in the league with Clio, but didn’t win and finished behind Clio.
The Wildcats began the week on May 18 when they traveled to Linden, to sweep the Eagles 11-2 and 12-1.
Offensive standouts for Oxford were Cassie Edgemon with 5 RBIs and four runs scored, Chelsea Kessler with 4 RBIs and four runs scored, and Corinne Luxton had 5 RBIs.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats took out the Brandon Blackhawks 4-1 and 12-2.
Luxton shined on the mound, allowing only 10 hits, recording 10 strikeouts and two walks in the victory. Kylie Bowles had 4 RBIs and Allie Laidlaw, Edgemon, and Luxton each had 2 RBIs.
Up next for the girls, was Holly.
‘The Wildcats disposed of the Holly Bronchos 9-1 and 8-0,? said McDevitt.
It was Luxton again leading the charge from the mound, only allowing eight hits in the doubleheader. She also had 12 strikeouts and zero walks.
Oxford’s offense continued the charge with Laidlaw and Kelly Cartner having three RBIs each.
With the regular season over, the Wildcats have changed their emphasis from the FML to district playoffs and beyond.
‘We are definitely a team that compete with the best of them and we have,? said McDevitt.
Oxford hosts the softball and baseball districts this Saturday.
Oxford is set to play the semi-finals at 10 a.m. and drew rival Lake Orion .
‘We split with Lake Orion earlier this season,? said McDevitt. ‘It is a great draw for us to make a statement – To be the best you have to beat the best.?
The softball team will be defending their District title when they play against the Dragons in the semi-finals at noon.
The District championship game for baseball and softball will begin at 3 p.m.
