They may not be going to Disney World to celebrate, but the Oxford Jr. Wildcats did win the Super Bowl.
On Saturday, the Freshman Blue team soundly thrashed the Clarkston Chiefs 26-7 to win the Northern Youth Football League’s (NYFL) Super Bowl VI played at OHS stadium.
‘It was fantastic. The kids weren’t nervous at all,? said Head Coach Jeff Miller. ‘They performed really solid right off the bat. We took the ball first, marched right down the field and scored (on the fourth play of the game).?
Leading the Jr. Wildcats to victory was Matthew Curtis (#22) who rushed for an impressive three touchdowns.
The fourth touchdown was scored by Michael Raisch (#87) off a pass from Ryan Miller (#11).
The Freshman Blue squad finished with a perfect 11-0 record that includes eight regular season victories, two playoff wins and of course, the Super Bowl championship.
Coach Miller noted that Clarkston came into the game 10-0 just like Oxford.
‘We were expecting a very tight battle,? he said. ‘For us to pull away so early was kind of a surprise. Our kids really did well.?
This was Oxford’s very first Super Bowl victory.
‘We just joined this particular league (NYFL) two years ago,? he said. ‘The league that we were in originally did not have post-season activities like playoffs or a Super Bowl.?
The NYFL consists of teams from Oakland and Lapeer counties.
Miller wished to thank all the parents, local merchants and volunteers who contributed to this winning season.
‘We had great support throughout the year from everybody in the community,? he said.
