Outgoing mail from the mailboxes of several residents around Springfield Township was tampered with on Dec. 27. In at least four incidents police have found opened mail on roads with checks missing that residents intended to pay bills.
According to Deputy Mike Carolin of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Springfield Township substation, the checks were stolen to get account numbers and information to make fraudulent purchases. He said the victims of the mail theft often do not realize the checks are stolen until they are contacted by businesses for not paying their bills.
Carolin strongly suggests residents send out mail from secured postal boxes or the post office.
The affected mail was tampered with or found on Spring Crest Court, Villa Crest, Tindall Road and Windcliff.
