Brandon Twp.- A recall just over a week ago of chocolate milk produced at Cook’s Farm Dairy was the farm’s first recall of any kind in more than 30 years in business.
The farm, located at 2950 E. Seymour Lake Road, voluntarily issued a recall on their chocolate milk packaged in plastic pints, plastic half-gallons, and plastic gallon containers with a 7/20 code date. The products were distributed to retail stores in southeastern Michigan and at the ‘Endless cup of chocolate milk? booth at the Oakland County Fair July 4-13.
No illnesses were reported, but Cook’s recalled the product out of caution after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) conducted routine sampling of the chocolate milk and found high levels of phosphatase, indicating the chocolate milk was underpasteurized.
‘We have been in business for more than 30 years and this is the first time we’ve had a recall,? said Lori Cook. ‘The important thing is nobody got sick and we are following all rules and requirements. We will continue to put out safe product.?
Cook’s is a federally inspected plant, with all equipments and processes regularly monitored in accordance with the USDA and MDARD regulations. All other products pasteurized the same day as the chocolate milk in question passed all tests. Cook was unsure why the chocolate milk did not and speculated it could have been a bad sample or lab result.
Consumers who have purchased Cook’s Farm Dairy Chocolate Milk with a 7/20 date code date are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Details: 248-627-3329.
