One of the area’s premier wrestling teams, Davison High School, swept through town last Thursday night, dominating the Wolves squad along the way as the Cardinals recorded a lopsided 40 to 20 victory over Clarkston High School in dual competition.
But the competition was just what Coach Joe DeGain was looking for, because he needed a benchmark – a target that identified the distance his team has to travel to become an elite team in state rankings.
The Cardinals are among the top five teams in the state of Michigan.
The Davison team, coached by Roy Hall, demonstrated why they are rated among the best in the state rankings. They were strong, quick, and clever, recording multiple pins.
Results by weight class for the varsity matches were led by Paul Donahoe (19 lbs.), Zak Burns (125 lbs.), Jason Williams (135 lbs.) and Jon Reader (135 lbs.).
Donohoe, a runnerup at the state level last year, pinned Josh Henger at 1:41 of his mismatch; Burns defeated Elliott May, 9-4; Whitman (130 lbs.) Beat Bryan Webb, 13-8;
Brent Metcalf (145 lbs.) pinned Josh McCallister at 1:07; and Nate Bundy (152 lbs.) defeated Tom Ellsworth, 21-9.
The Clarkston Wolves standouts were Braden L’Amoreaux (140 lbs.), who won by 13-7 over Corey Rogers; Sean Turner (160 lbs.),winner on a technical fall; Steve Smiley, who bested Joey Kimosh in a fall at :51 and Matt Herron (112), who defeated Ben Warner, 12.7.
Kevin Austin of Davison pinned Brian Klein at :49 and Travis Perry defeated Jason Talbot by a score of 6-4.
The Clarkston squad now travels to Troy for a match on Dec. 10.
