Miranda Sloan, 2012 graduate of Clarkston High School, was diagnosed on March 6, 2015, with Osteosarcoma, a rare type of aggressive bone cancer.
To help Sloan and her family with expenses, Andrew Lange and Ellen Kuhn, fellow 2012 Clarkston graduates, thought of an idea for a fundraiser.
‘Nobody should have to go through this, especially at such a young age. Miranda has been nothing but cheerful and uplifting about the situation, and she has so much support surrounding her. Ellen and I want this fundraiser to be very successful for her,? Lange said.
The fundraiser, called Sloan’s BarbeCURE, will take place on Sunday, July 26, at Clintonwood Park at the South Bay Pavilion from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The fundraiser will be a family-oriented event, with yard games for everyone to play. A dunk tank and a snow cone machine will be at the fundraiser for people to use.
‘This means a lot to me. She’s my best friend and I want to do anything and everything I can to help. We’ve been planning this event since the day she was diagnosed, and I’m very eager and excited to see the turnout,? said Kuhn.
There will be a silent auction, a bake sale, a 50/50, and a raffle.
The raffle will include dinner gift cards/coupons, raffle baskets, homemade jewelry, furniture, and more.
Sloan works at Dunham’s Sports in Waterford and her co-workers are working hard to make this event a success.
She has already completed 10 weeks of chemotherapy and surgery. After recovering from the surgery, she will undergo 20 weeks of chemotherapy with radiation. Doctors are hoping the cancer treatment is completed by New Year’s.
Sloan graduated from Clarkston in June 2012, attended Oakland Community College from August 2012 until December 2014, and attended Western Michigan University this past spring semester.
‘I’m very grateful to live in a town surrounded by all of this love and support. My friends and family have been by my side this entire time and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m looking forward to seeing everybody at the fundraiser,? she said.
For those who cannot attend the fundraiser and would like to help Sloan and her family, a GoFundMe account is available at www.gofundme.com/opn35w.
