Competition stretches Leonard kids’ imaginations

Two teams of first and second-graders from Leonard Elementary participated in the Feb. 27 Destination ImagiNation event held at Waterford Mott High School.
This was the first time Leonard’s sent teams to the event, so although the students participated, they did not compete.
Destination ImagiNation is an after-school activity in which students work in teams to solve mind-bending challenges and present their solutions at tournaments.
Leonard’s teams took on the ‘Weighty News? challenge in which they had to create a structure using only newspaper and tape that would hold some type of weight.
They then had to present the structure to the judges during a mock television news cast, which they also created and performed complete with a commercial.
‘They had to do everything on their own,? said Michelle Mumbrue, who served as a parent adviser. ‘One of the big compliments they received was (about) how well they worked together.? ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
