Goodrich Middle School eighth grader Matilyn McKinney demonstrated her artistic skills and patriotism recently.
McKinney participated in the Fourth Annual Constitution Day Poster Contest, along with classmates and students nationwide. McKinney was the only student within Michigan to place as either a winner or honorable mention. Her history teacher Krista Bethke along with the Goodrich Board of Education recognized her achivement at the Dec. 20 monthly meeting.
Being one of the only 10 honorable mentions selected from 9,399 entries from 46 states and Department of Defense schools in Japan, Italy, and South Korea, McKinney’s design was perceived as unique and worthy of recognition.
The Constitution Day Poster Contest is an annual contest for students of all ages and from all around the world to celebrate Constitution Day, Sept. 17, and to show off their artistic and creative skills.
Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance that recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on Sept.17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
The law establishing the holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004.
