Count butterflies this weekend

North American Butterfly Count on Saturday, June 27, at the Golden Preserve in Springfield Township and Independence Oaks County Park in Independence Township.
‘Butterfly counts help evaluate our natural resources management plans by tracking the distribution of butterflies in managed areas,? said Kathleen Dougherty, Oakland County Parks natural resources educator.
Butterfly count at Golden Preserve, 11400 Clark Road, is 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; at Independence Oaks, 9501 Sashabaw Road, 12-3 p.m.
‘We catch the butterflies, look them up and release them,? Dougherty said. ‘Some we have seen in the past include the Red Admiral, Spring Azure and Monarch. We have also identified new ones.?
Fee is $3/person for both parks. Park permits required. Participants can register with the Stewardship Network at www.stewardshipnetwork.org.
