A township trustee to replace now county commissioner Eric Wilson will be named on July 21 by the Orion Township Board of Trustees.
The board interviewed everyone who applied for the opening, a total of 16 candidates, prior to the regular board meeting on July 7. One candidate was unable to attend the interview session and could possibly be interviewed by phone prior to July 21.
Those applying for the position are: Mark Crane, Dan Dewey, Susan Dorris, Daniel Durham, Marie English, John Garlicki, Joseph Geraci, Matthew Gibb, Gerald Letcher, David McGuire, Larry Mullins, Daniel Myslakowski, Jeffrey Stout, William Wilsher, Alice Young, and Roland Zilka.
The chosen candidate will finish the term left vacant by Wilson, ending in November 2004. Wilson was voted in June to replace Larry Obrecht as the Oakland County Commissioner for District 3, representing Orion and Oakland Townships.
“We were a little surprised at the number, but I guess we shouldn’t be,” said supervisor Jerry Dywasuk, who encouraged those not chosen to serve on the board to possibly join other committees in the township.
“Everyone is a winner here,” he said.
Clerk Jill Bastian asked that the board consider the decision at the July 21 meeting, saying she might not be able to attend but would do all she could to be there.
“It should be the first item under pending business,” she said.
“If there’s not a full board, do we still go forward?” asked trustee Richard Tomczak.
“You and I had a discussion about the fact that anyone of us could have an emergency,” Bastian said. “My comment at the last meeting was I would prefer (it not be the 21st)…but I will try to be here.”
“As long as there are four members here, we go forward with it,” Tomczak said. “If we give a date, that’s when we do it.”
